A chronometer has nothing to do with a stopwatch. Historically it described a marine timekeeper accurate enough to determine longitude; in modern usage it is a claim about precision, certified against a defined standard. Which standard matters: the Swiss body COSC tests uncased movements, while certifications such as Besançon and the Master Chronometer programme test the finished, cased watch. Some watches are chronometers with no chronograph function at all, and plenty of chronographs are not chronometers. The words share a Greek root and nothing else.
