Why 92.5 Percent, Specifically

Reading the Hallmark
The stamp you are looking for is 925, .925, or the word sterling, usually on the inside of a ring shank, on the back of a pendant, on a clasp, or on an earring post. It is small and often needs a loupe or a phone camera at maximum zoom to read.
Some pieces carry more: a maker's mark, a country of origin, an assay office mark in jurisdictions that require independent testing. More marks generally means more accountability, though the absence of a maker's mark is common and not itself suspicious.
Two things a hallmark does not do. It does not prove authenticity - stamps can be applied to anything, and counterfeit hallmarks exist. And it does not tell you about plating: a rhodium-plated sterling piece is still marked 925, because the alloy underneath is sterling. Rhodium plating on silver is common, entirely legitimate, and worth knowing about, since it makes a piece brighter and much slower to tarnish until the plating wears.
Tarnish: What It Is and What It Isn't
Sterling silver tarnishes. This is the most-complained-about property of the material and the most misunderstood. Tarnish is silver sulphide, formed when the surface reacts with sulphur-bearing compounds in the air, and it really is only a surface film - on visibly tarnished silver, typically tens to hundreds of nanometres deep, against a piece measured in millimetres.
It is not rust. Rust is corrosion that keeps going, flaking away to expose fresh metal beneath; tarnish is corrosion that stops, because the sulphide film seals the surface it forms on. A tarnished silver chain has lost nothing but its shine, and polishing restores it completely. This is worth internalising because it changes tarnish from a defect into a maintenance item.
The rate depends heavily on environment and on you. Airborne sulphur compounds, humidity, wool, rubber bands, some cosmetics, and the composition of an individual's perspiration all accelerate it - which is why two people can wear identical chains and get very different results. The copper in the alloy contributes as well, adding its own darkening oxides and sulphides on top of the silver sulphide, which is part of why fine silver stays brighter longer than sterling does.

The Things Sold as Silver That Are Not Silver
Nickel silver and German silver are the same thing under two names, and neither contains any silver whatsoever. They are copper-nickel-zinc alloys that happen to be silver-coloured. They are legitimate materials with legitimate uses, and they are also the most common way the word silver is used to mislead. The nickel content makes them a poor choice for anyone with a contact allergy.
Tibetan silver and Alpaca silver are similarly silver in name only, with highly variable compositions. Older Tibetan silver items in particular have been found to contain lead, so treat them with caution around children.
Silver-plated is a layer of real silver over a base metal. On inexpensive jewelry that layer is often a fraction of a micron and wears through quickly; on good electroplated flatware and holloware it can be tens of microns and last generations. Either way there is no precious base underneath, unlike gold vermeil. A silver-plated piece is not a cheaper sterling piece; it is a different product.
Silver-filled is a newer category - a bonded layer of sterling over a base core, expressed as a fraction of weight in the same way as gold-filled. It is more substantial than plate and less than solid, and it is uncommon enough that you should read the description carefully when you see it.
The practical tests at home are that real sterling is non-magnetic and feels heavier than it looks. Neither is conclusive on its own. The reliable answers are a hallmark plus a reputable seller, or a jeweller with a testing kit.
Is Sterling Silver Worth Buying?
As a material for jewelry, yes, on its own terms. Sterling is genuinely precious, holds detail beautifully, suits a huge range of designs, and costs a small fraction of gold. It is also repairable and re-polishable many times over, which is more than can be said for anything with a coating - with the caveat that every polish takes a little metal, so antique and filigree pieces do have a limit.
As a store of value, be realistic. Silver has a market price and sterling contains a known proportion of it, but almost everything you pay for a piece of silver jewelry is design, labour, and retail margin rather than metal. Scrap value on a sterling chain is a fraction of what it cost. That is not a criticism of silver - the same is true of gold jewelry - but it does mean buying sterling as an investment is a category error.
