- No authority defines these classes. Not IFRA, which regulates individual ingredients rather than names; not EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009; no ISO standard. The published ranges disagree with each other, which is the clearest possible evidence that none of them is binding.
- An eau de parfum is sometimes a different composition, not a stronger eau de toilette. The Perfume Society puts it carefully: different concentrations “may sometimes have differing notes in them, and not simply be weaker or stronger.” Chanel's Cristalle is the standard example: the EDT is a bright citrus, the EDP a full-blown floral chypre.
- The hours-per-concentration figures everyone quotes are convention, not measurement. Longevity is set by the vapour pressure of the individual molecules, so a 20% extrait built on citrus will vanish faster than a 6% eau de toilette built on oakmoss and musks.
- Sillage and longevity are different quantities that trade off against each other. A high-concentration extrait on heavy base notes can be quiet and last all day. High concentration does not mean loud.
- Cologne means two things: a citrus style created in Cologne, Germany in 1709, and the modern American generic term for men's fragrance. The dictionary definition carries no gender at all.
Nobody Defines These Classes, and the Published Ranges Prove It
Start with the regulatory position, because it is cleaner than you would expect. IFRA, the fragrance industry's own safety body, regulates individual ingredients rather than product names; its categories are organised around consumer exposure type and application route, not scent strength, and it describes its own Standards as a voluntary, globally accepted and recognized risk management system. EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, the most comprehensive cosmetics law in the world, governs labelling, safety assessment, minimum durability and allergen declaration — and contains no definition of eau de toilette, eau de parfum or parfum anywhere in it. There is no ISO standard for the classes either. What you are reading on a box is a marketing term with a long and consistent trade usage behind it, which is not the same thing as a definition.
Here are the two most commonly cited sets of ranges, side by side, because the disagreement between them is the evidence. Extrait de parfum — The Perfume Society: extract 20–30%, with “perfume” at 15–25%. The IFRA-referenced figures widely reproduced on Wikipedia: 15–40%, with a typical value near 20%.
Eau de parfum — The Perfume Society: 8–15%. IFRA-referenced: 10–20%, typically around 15%.
Eau de toilette — The Perfume Society: 4–8%. IFRA-referenced: 5–15%, typically around 10%.
Eau de cologne — The Perfume Society: 2–4%. IFRA-referenced: 2–6%, around 5%.
Aftershave or splash — The Perfume Society: 2–4%. IFRA-referenced: 1–3%. Notice that the top of one eau de toilette range sits at the middle of the other's eau de parfum range. Two sources cannot both be authoritative and disagree by that margin; neither is, and that is the point. The second column is worth naming precisely, since this whole page is an argument about source quality: those figures are the IFRA-referenced ranges reproduced in the perfume-concentration tables on Wikipedia, and Wikipedia's own articles do not agree with one another about them from one page to the next — which, if anything, makes the case here rather than weakening it.
The better sources say so themselves. The Perfume Society hedges explicitly, noting that these concentrations can vary from fragrance to fragrance, depending on how that particular brand like to blend their scents, and offering the figures only as a rule of thumb. The perfume historian Elena Vosnaki puts it more bluntly: different perfume houses assign different amounts of essences to each of their perfumes, further complicating the matters. One term deserves a specific flag. “Eau fraîche equals 1–3%” is repeated across the internet with no authoritative definition behind it at all — treat eau fraîche as a marketing descriptor for something light, not as a defined class with a number attached.
The Corollary Most Articles Miss: an EDP Is Sometimes a Different Perfume
This is the strongest and most defensible thing on this page, and almost nobody says it. The Perfume Society states it in these words: different concentrations (Perfume, or Eau de Toilette, etc.) “may sometimes have differing notes in them, and not simply be weaker or stronger.” Note the hedge, which we are keeping: sometimes, not always. But when a house releases an eau de toilette and an eau de parfum under one name, it has sometimes composed two different formulae rather than diluting or concentrating a single one — and you cannot tell which from the box.
The clean worked example is Chanel's Cristalle. The eau de toilette is a bright citrus with a light chypre-like base; the eau de parfum is a full-blown floral chypre. They share a name and a family resemblance, and they are not the same perfume at a different strength. The documented reason is not that one was engineered for a purpose the other could not serve: they are separate creations nineteen years apart, by different perfumers. Henri Robert composed the eau de toilette in 1974; Jacques Polge composed the eau de parfum in 1993. Two noses, two decades, one name.
The practical consequence is that the percentage on the box tells you less than the fact that the two juices may be different perfumes. Never assume that loving the eau de toilette means you will love the eau de parfum, or that the extrait is simply the version you already know turned up. Smell them side by side on skin, on separate days if you can, and buy the one you actually prefer rather than the one further up the concentration ladder. Longevity and Sillage Are Different Things, and Neither Is Set by the Percentage
You have seen the numbers: cologne two hours, eau de toilette three to five, eau de parfum five to eight, parfum eight to twelve. Those figures have no traceable source. They circulate because they circulate, and neither of The Perfume Society's own articles on the subject gives hour figures at all. Call them convention and treat any page that presents them as findings with suspicion.
What actually governs longevity is the vapour pressure of the individual molecules present, not the total oil load. The familiar top, middle and base note structure is really a relative volatility hierarchy: base notes persist because they are high-molecular-weight, low-vapour-pressure molecules that evaporate slowly, while top notes are small and volatile and leave first. So concentration sets the starting quantity and note structure sets the decay curve. State the consequence plainly, because it is the useful part: a 20% extrait built almost entirely from citrus and light florals will disappear from your skin faster than a 6% eau de toilette built on oakmoss, patchouli, ambroxan and musks. The percentage tells you how much material went on. The materials tell you how long it stays.
Sillage is a separate quantity again, and the two trade off. Projection and sillage describe headspace concentration — how many molecules are in the air around you right now — and are governed by evaporation rate, heavily amplified by airflow. Longevity describes how long material remains on the skin, governed by how slowly the remaining molecules leave. For a fixed quantity these are inversely related: anything that raises the evaporation rate raises projection and shortens longevity. The counterintuitive result worth internalising is that a high-concentration extrait built on heavy base notes can have low sillage and high longevity. High concentration does not mean loud. Skin matters too: a 2025 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science measured fragrance retention across ten volunteers and observed five statistically distinct groups, indicating a difference in the retention of fragrance molecules depending on the skin type — a small study, but a rare direct measurement of something wearers have always claimed. Why Cologne Means Two Things
Giovanni Maria Farina created Eau de Cologne in Cologne, Germany, in 1709 — some accounts date the creation to 1703 and treat 1709 as the year he named it. It was a specific structure: lemon, orange, bergamot and neroli in a light alcohol base. What it was not is a percentage. Farina's recipe was never published, so the tidy figures you see quoted for the original are modern cologne conventions read backwards onto it, not a historical formula. Historically, then, cologne named a style as much as a strength: a citrus composition in a light spirit, made to be splashed rather than dabbed.
The second meaning is much more recent and entirely commercial. In contemporary American usage, the term cologne has become a generic term for perfumes marketed toward men — a retail convention layered onto a three-hundred-year-old product name. It is worth noting what the dictionary does not do: Merriam-Webster dates the first English use to 1832 and defines cologne neutrally, with no gender in the definition at all. The gendering is a marketing habit, not a property of the liquid.
The practical upshot is simple. A bottle sold in the United States as a men's cologne is very often an eau de toilette or an eau de parfum by concentration, and the word cologne on the front tells you about the aisle it was merchandised in rather than about how much perfume oil is inside. Is a Higher Concentration Better? Do the Arithmetic
We do not print prices on this site, so here is the same insight expressed as ratios, which is more useful anyway. Take a single house with all three concentrations on sale — Chanel N°5 is the obvious test case, since the extrait, eau de parfum and eau de toilette are all current — and be careful to compare inside one market, because pricing the extrait in Canadian dollars against an eau de parfum in US dollars produces a ratio that is partly just an exchange rate. Done properly: per millilitre, the extrait runs roughly six to thirteen times what the eau de parfum costs, depending on which flacon of each you compare — and that spread is itself part of the point. Compare the small bottle of each, like for like, and it is closer to seven times. Meanwhile the published ranges — which disagree with each other, as above — put the oil difference somewhere between roughly 1.3 and 3 times. Per unit of actual perfume oil, in other words, the extrait is several times more expensive. That arithmetic is available to anyone and almost nobody does it, which is why “extrait is better value because you use less” gets asserted everywhere without ever being checked.
There is a fair counterweight, and it deserves stating. Extrait is dabbed in far smaller doses than an eau de parfum is sprayed, so cost per wear narrows considerably from that headline ratio — it does not close, but it narrows. You are also paying for the flacon, the presentation and, in some houses genuinely, for costlier natural materials that only make commercial sense at extrait volumes. And some compositions really do exist only at one concentration. None of that changes the underlying point: you are not buying oil by weight, and you should not pretend the premium is only about strength.
The bigger lever, and the one nobody mentions, is bottle size. Within that same N°5 range, the largest eau de parfum flacon works out cheaper per millilitre than the eau de toilette does, despite being the higher concentration — and the smallest eau de parfum is roughly twice the per-millilitre cost of the largest. Format moves price per millilitre far more than concentration does. So the honest recommendation is the unglamorous one: work out which concentration you actually like on your own skin, then buy the largest flacon of that one you will realistically finish before it turns.
Storage, Shelf Life, and the Missing Expiry Date
If you have hunted for an expiry date on a bottle of fine fragrance and found nothing, your label is not defective. In the United States there are no laws or regulations that require cosmetics to have specific shelf lives or have expiration dates on their labels, per the FDA. In the EU, Regulation 1223/2009 Article 19 does require a date of minimum durability — but explicitly states it shall not be mandatory for cosmetic products with a minimum durability of more than 30 months, in which case a Period After Opening symbol is used instead. Most fine fragrances clear 30 months comfortably, which is exactly why they typically carry neither a date nor the little open-jar symbol.
What does eventually degrade a fragrance is oxidation, and the chemistry is specific. Terpene oxidation is the primary mechanism, and the two most vulnerable molecules are among the most widely used in perfumery: limonene, which carries the citrus effect, and linalool, which is near-ubiquitous and central to lavender. Both are monoterpenes with multiple double bonds and unsaturated structures. Oxygen, UV light, heat and trace metal ions initiate hydroperoxide formation, which breaks down into epoxides, aldehydes, ketones and alcohols — and critically, the reaction is autocatalytic, so once it starts it accelerates itself. This is not only a quality issue. Hydroperoxides formed from oxidised limonene and linalool are far more potent sensitisers than limonene and linalool themselves, and in one series of 5,773 patients already being patch-tested for suspected contact dermatitis, 7.0% reacted to oxidised linalool and 5.1% to oxidised limonene — a clinic population, not the general one. An old, oxidised bottle is more likely to irritate skin than a fresh one.
Everything practical follows from that chemistry. Keep bottles in their boxes and out of daylight; avoid the bathroom, which cycles both heat and humidity; do not decant into partly empty containers, because the headspace is full of oxygen; and take the FDA's specific advice not to leave fragrance where it is exposed to heat, such as in a hot car. Citrus- and lavender-forward compositions degrade fastest, and the tells are a juice that has darkened and a sour, sharp note where the opening used to be. As for how long — the trade convention is roughly two years once opened, and decades are genuinely possible for an unopened bottle kept dark and cool, but the widely quoted three-to-five-year figure has no primary source behind it, so treat it as a rule of thumb. Refrigeration is the same story: a low, stable temperature helps, while repeated cycling in and out of a warm room plausibly does more harm than the cold does good. A cool, dark, stable cupboard is the answer, and it always has been.

Expect noticeably longer ingredient lists on European boxes. Linalool and limonene — the two molecules whose oxidation products drive most fragrance skin reactions — are not new arrivals on that label: both were already on the pre-existing list of 26 declarable allergens, and the 2023 regulation refines how their entries are handled rather than introducing them.
